TEMS GLOBAL HOUSING INITIATIVE

The Problem

  • Rapid population growth and urbanization, especially in Africa and Asia, are putting unsustainable pressures on traditional housing delivery systems that are often informal or that rely on the state

  • By 2030, as many as 2 billion of the world’s people will live in urban slums

  • It can be estimated that at any one time, there are more than 100 million people that are homeless worldwide

  • The bottom line is that more than three billion people will need new housing by the year 2030

  • Providing all people with access to decent and affordable housing is one of the main aims of TEMS’s Global Sustainable Development Plan

The Solution

  • The only foreseeable way of economically meeting this overwhelming need for new housing is with 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP).

  • 3DCP houses and structures can be constructed very quickly meaning that a typical three bedroom house can be constructed in about 24 hrs, making it especially useful after earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, fires etc. or another types of natural disasters, when a large number of housing units in a particular geographical area are destroyed and need to be replaced quickly, efficiently and economically.

  • Large-scale industrial 3DCP can be used to inexpensively produce houses that typically cost up to 90% less than traditionally built structures.

  • 3DCP allows the production of a wide variety of innovative structural shapes that are either impossible, or are simply too expensive to build using conventional construction methods.

  • A wide variety of raw materials can be used by 3DCP to manufacture structures. For example, it is possible to use hempcrete or to use the plethora of plastics presently floating in the world’s oceans or discarded in waste dumps as potential raw materials for 3DCP.

  • Properly designed 3DCP structures can be significantly stronger than traditionally built buildings. Tests have shown that 3DCP houses can be economically built to resist category four (4) hurricanes and magnitude eight (8) earthquakes. These structures are also significantly more fire resistant and traditionally built wooden structures.

  • 3DCP structures can be built virtually anywhere, even in the most remote and inhospitable locations.
